INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Hundreds of college students around Indiana have admitted to being illegal immigrants and are being forced to pay out-of-state tuition rates that can triple their bills. Laws approved by the Legislature this year take away in-state tuition eligibility from students "not lawfully present" in the country. The Indianapolis Star reports about 300 students at Indiana's seven public colleges have acknowledged they aren't in the country legally. Sayra Perez was born in Mexico and has lived in the U.S. since she was 5. She says she'll face paying $4,500 for only two classes this year toward a biochemistry degree at IUPUI. Republican Rep. Mike Karickhoff of Kokomo co-sponsored a bill taking away in-state tuition eligibility.
